This chardonnay is unique, it tastes like green sour apple and has some minerality. We taste the 2018 Estate Riesling and then move onto the 2016 Estate Chardonnay. This winery has so much unique and rich history, and we're only on the first wine. We learn that it's the original foundation of the house, which did not survive the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. However, their location is pure Carneros with the cooler sea breeze coming from the Pacific Ocean and the feeling of saltwater in the air.Īs we sip our rosé, I notice the perimeter of the deck is brick. This was because Carneros wasn't considered as high esteem as it is today. In an ironic twist, The Dresel's politically maneuvered their winery to be officially categorized as Sonoma, rather than Carneros, which surrounds their vineyards. In fact, their long driveway is named after the original owners, Dresel. The original owners were from Germany, and before Prohibition, they grew mostly German grapes. We learn that the winery itself has been around since before Prohibition. ![]() Our tasting hostess greets us and describes the history of Scribe as she pours our first wine, the 2018 Rosé of Pinot Noir. Today we’re doing their “Hacienda” tasting, which includes four wines and a plethora of small bites. Scribe is reservation only, make sure you call at least a week or so in advance. We check in for our tasting on the patio. Kids are welcomed, so long as they don’t disturb other guests.We park, and begin to walk towards the winery.Reservations are required, so you must get in touch via email or phone to plan your visit.As a member you also get invited to special events and dinners at the property and in neighboring cities.If you become a member of Scribe’s Viticultural Society, you are allowed a certain amount of guests depending on your membership, so you may be able to waive the tasting fee if you group is small enough.There’s nothing worse than feeling rushed!Ī few tips before you plan to make the trek out to Scribe: Meaning, we were really enjoying each other’s company and despite having a set time block because of all of the appointments Scribe had booked, they were accommodating and let us hang out a bit longer. What I like most about Scribe (besides the wine) is that they let you have the kind of experience that you want to have. There are only a handful of Chardonnay’s that I actually like, and the aging process of this one really makes it special. I enjoyed each wine we tasted but my favorite was the Skin Fermented Chardonnay. A nice bonus was that we were treated to a cheese/snack board and it was the perfect compliment to all of the wine we sampled. Once we were made aware of what makes Scribe so unique, we were introduced to the wines we would be tasting: the Estate Riesling, Chardonnay, Skin Fermented Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The name? Founder Andrew Mariani and his team consider themselves “scribes” of the land and the winery is a testament to that. Once we checked in, our host for the afternoon gave us the history of the property (dating back to 1858 all the way through Prohibition) and about the people behind Scribe. But the grown up, hip version of day camp and it was exactly what the doctor ordered. Once I got out of the car, it felt like I had arrived at day camp. Keep going and it leads you to the top of the hill, where the tasting room and picnic tables are. I drove from Sacramento to meet everyone and it only took me an hour and some change – not bad! When arriving at the vineyard, a long row of palm trees guide you to a dilapidated hacienda that makes you feel like you are on a back road in Cuba instead of Sonoma. One of us had the idea to go to Scribe so we all gladly followed suit! I had seen the winery all over my Instagram feed, so I was pretty familiar with the place and was excited to finally visit. A few of my best gals from my time in San Francisco and I got together to visit Scribe Winery in Sonoma. ![]()
